Dear Friend,
Today marks one year since Santee Cooper and SCANA walked away from the V.C. Summer nuclear project, leaving only their customers—South Carolina families and businesses—to foot the bill.
The failed investment by Santee Cooper and SCANA cost S.C. residents $9 billion, earning it the title of the largest financial disaster in our state’s history.
We shouldn’t be surprised at what happened.
Did you know that South Carolina is in the distinct minority of state governments that are in the business of running a utility company?
- A government-run company sets the rates we pay for our electric bills.
- A government-run company makes decisions without shareholder input and without efficiency or profit in mind.
- Santee Cooper customers have already seen five rate hikes with even more to come to cover the nuclear project the company walked away from.
Not all is lost!
South Carolinians finally have a chance to make this right and get our state government out of the business of running an electric company. Governor Henry McMaster and eight state legislators were recently appointed to a new committee to study the future of Santee Cooper.
Stand with us in urging the committee members to take swift and thoughtful action to clear the path for a sale of Santee Cooper and let the private sector do what it does best.
